‘Tis the season for holiday shopping, but even if you’re among the savviest of shopaholics, chances are there’s at least one person on your list who has got you stumped. Whether it’s the person who has everything or just someone who has very particular tastes, it’s not always easy nailing the perfect gift for that impossible-to-shop-for friend or family member.

But before you admit defeat and ask them outright for help (why ruin the surprise?), tackle even the toughest on your list with a few of my top tips for success this shopping season:

  1.  Get creative with gift cards: Some say money or gift cards might seem impersonal, but there’s no longer a stigma attached to giving a little of the green this season. For the person who has everything, a gift card might be just the ticket for a perfect present because it allows them to spend it however they choose. But do your due diligence to make sure you’re on target; consult the recipient’s social network posts for possible products and brands they like to better your chances of getting one they’ll put to good use. One of the best gifts I purchased for a very particular friend was a gift card for movie tickets. She chose what she wanted to see was enchanted.
  2. Think outside the store: Sure, many of us see the mall as our second home around the holidays, but whatever you do, try not to meander the aisles aimlessly in search of a gift. Instead, go in with a game plan; streamlining ideas in advance of hitting the shops can help narrow down your options so you spend less time searching. Or, better yet, head directly to the web for a plethora of great sites with gift suggestions, all at your fingertips.
  3. Ask friends and family for advice: When in doubt, poll it out. Social networking can really come in handy when you want to collect new ideas, gather insight and get opinions. Social shopping apps (such as ours at Shopcade.com) even allow friends to call out their favorite products and share this information with friends via their networks. We try to take it a step further by showing which products are trending among the community, providing suggestions for other relevant products based on your and your network’s Facebook ”likes.”
  4. Give gifts that keep on giving: Rather than giving a one-time gift, subscription gifts can be an unexpected way to treat your recipient year-round. Whether it’s a favorite magazine or food-of-the-month club – or even an extension of something they already use regularly, such as a newspaper subscription, movie rental membership or house cleaning service – each time they receive an installment, they’ll get to feel the original excitement all over again.
  5. Experiences can be everything: Finally, as trite as it may sound, it’s not always the gift itself, but the thought behind it that counts. Consider out-of-the-box ideas such as giving the gift of labor (house repair, garage sale help) to a relative or neighbor. Or redeem your hotel points and airline miles to give an over-worked friend a weekend getaway or vacation that costs you nothing. Or simply surprise a friend or family member with booklets of coupons for free hours of babysitting or meals that can be redeemed on busy weeknights. The sky’s the limit when it comes to donating your time and energy.

Happy holidays, and have a jolly good time gifting this season!
