Mommy Blogger Product Reviews-exposure for your product

by techtalk on June 16, 2009

Looking for some exposure for your product. Don’t have lots of money to spend on a magazine ad?  Consider approaching a mom blogger to write a review about your product. There are several mom bloggers out there who have large followings , they are the “queens” of  word-of-mouth marketing.  How do you get a mom blogger to review your product? Ask them, or follow mom bloggers on twitter,  make tweets that you are looking for someone to do a  product review, read blogs written by mom bloggers and make comments, most importantly join the on-line conversation.  Never SPAM a blog, do not leave a link to your website unless there is a place to approriately submit your website.

Usually the mom blogger gets to try your product free of charge  in exchange for giving your product  exposure. Therefore, since you have given the blogger a free product  request that they add links to your website, blog or social media profiles that you have created for your business.  These links are valuable for your website.

Sometimes, a mommy blogger will contact you and ask to review a product. When this happens make sure you look over the blog carefully. Question whether the blog is a good fit for your product.  In addition, there are a few technical things I look for when evaluating a blog for a product review. First, I look at the page rank, this tells me about the website’s quality.  Usually it is better to have a product review on a blog that has a page rank of 4 or above, the highest page rank is 10,  (it is very rare for a site to be ranked a 10).  I also consider the age of the blog. New blogs usually start off with a lower page rank or no rank, it takes about 3 to 6 months to get page rank. If it is a new blog with great content and lots of activity consider this blog because it may have several followers in the future. I also look to see how many page views as well as time spent on the blog by individual readers.  Often times this info will be at the bottom at the blog under a button called Sitemeter.   Don’t be shy about asking the blogger about their readership, lots of times the blogger will supply that info for you. Also ask the blogger where the product review will be posted on the blog. As well as how they “spread the word” about the new blog post. Ask if the blog post is tweeted.

Holly Klaassen of Her SEO, has created a list of the top 10 product review blogs. It would be a good idea to check out these blog. Read some of the content and start joining the conversation. Remember no SPAM!

Very Recently, there has been a great deal of investigation by the
US Federal trade comission against bloggers and website owners
for not publishing advertising income, or existing
relationships with ad networks.

What are your thoughts concerning how this could impact
the blog community?
